Winding for more than 155 kilometers along the rushing, glacial-fed torrent of the Kunhar River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Kaghan Valley—anchored by the bustling mountain town of Naran (2,409 m / 7,904 ft)—is Pakistan's most cherished and visited alpine summer playground. Flanked on both sides by dense Himalayan cedar (deodar) and silver fir forests, Kaghan ascends dramatically from temperate orchard terraces in Balakot through subalpine flower meadows to the arctic winds and glaciers of the Babusar Pass (4,173 m / 13,691 ft).

Kaghan is legendary in South Asian folklore and classic romantic literature. Looming directly above the valley stands Malika Parbat (5,290 m / 17,356 ft)—the 'Queen of the Mountains'—whose towering, ice-crested pyramid reflects into the supernatural turquoise waters of Lake Saif-ul-Malook. Here, according to the 19th-century epic poem written by Sufi saint Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, the Persian Prince Saif-ul-Malook fell in love with the fairy princess Badi-ul-Jamal under the moonlit sky.

Kaghan Valley presents an astonishing concentration of alpine lakes, meadows, and river sports along the N-15 corridor:

• Lake Saif-ul-Malook (3,224 m / 10,578 ft): Located 9 kilometers above Naran town, this world-renowned high-altitude glacial lake is framed by snow-covered ridges and fields of yellow alpine buttercups. Reached via a thrilling 40-minute 4x4 jeep ride up an unpaved cliffside track, it offers traditional wooden boat rowing, photography, and camping on its western shore.
• Siri Paye Meadows & Shogran: Perched on a high mountain ridge overlooking the lower Kaghan valley at 2,895 meters, Siri Paye is an emerald carpet of rolling alpine lawns dotted with reflection ponds and grazing cattle, situated beneath the rocky summit of Makra Peak (3,885 m). It is accessed via 4x4 jeep or horseback from the pine-clad hill station of Shogran.
• Babusar Pass (4,173 m / 13,691 ft): The pinnacle of the Kaghan Highway and the natural border dividing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Gilgit-Baltistan. Stepping out at the windy pass crest offers breathtaking panoramas of the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges, with roadside tea stalls serving hot Pakistani chai and mountain soup.
• Lulusar Lake (3,410 m): The primary natural headwater of the Kunhar River. Spanning a mirror-smooth crescent along the N-15 Highway near Besal, Lulusar is surrounded by serrated ridges, wildflower banks, and snowfields that linger well into midsummer.
• Dudipatsar National Park & Ansoo Lake: Dudipatsar ('White Mountain Lake') is a pristine alpine tarn encircled by snow-draped peaks, reached via a rewarding day trek from Besal. Nearby, high above Saif-ul-Malook at 4,240 meters, lies Ansoo Lake, a high-altitude marvel shaped naturally like a human teardrop.
• Kunhar River White-Water Rafting: Swelled by melting snows from May to August, the Kunhar River provides Class II and Class III river rafting sections between Naran and Balakot, managed by certified safety instructors.

How to Reach Naran & Kaghan Valley

Overland Highway Route: Departing Islamabad via the high-speed Hazara Motorway (M-15), you reach Balakot in approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. From Balakot, the paved National Highway N-15 winds smoothly along the Kunhar River gorge, reaching Shogran in 3.5 hours and Naran town in 5.5 to 6.5 hours in any standard passenger sedan or family vehicle. All-wheel drive (4x4) is required only for off-road branches such as Lake Saif-ul-Malook, Siri Paye, and Lalazar.
