Chogolisa Expedition (7,665m): Bride Peak Vigne Glacier Climb

Chogolisa (7,665 metres / 25,148 ft), internationally renowned as Bride Peak, is one of the most graceful, distinctive, and storied mountains in the Karakoram Range. Situated southwest of Concordia—the glorious throne room of the mountain gods—Chogolisa features a sweeping trapezoidal summit crowned by an almost level, snow-capped roof resembling a flowing bridal veil. Standing as the 36th highest peak on Earth, Chogolisa holds an immortal place in alpine history: in 1909, the Duke of the Abruzzi reached an astonishing 7,498 metres on its south ridge, establishing a world altitude record that stood unbroken for 13 years. Tragically, it is also the mountain where the legendary Austrian alpinist Hermann Buhl fell to his death in 1957 when a snow cornice collapsed beneath him during a summit attempt. First climbed in 1958 by a Japanese team led by T. Kuwabara (summiteers M. Fujihira and K. Hirai), Chogolisa remains a dream expedition for alpinists drawn to sweeping snow ridges and legendary Karakoram history.

The expedition follows the legendary Baltoro Glacier trek from Askole, trekking past the granite spires of Trango Towers and Urdukas to the glacial junction of Concordia. From Concordia, teams turn south up the pristine Vigne Glacier, establishing Base Camp at 4,800m directly beneath the northern slopes of Chogolisa. The route ascends moderate-to-steep snow slopes to the Chogolisa Saddle (6,100m), followed by a sustained climb along the exposed Northeast Ridge, where cornices and high-altitude winds require utmost vigilance.

40-Day Comprehensive Chogolisa Expedition Itinerary

This structured forty-day climbing itinerary outlines the Baltoro approach, high-camp staging, and summit assault on Chogolisa:

• Days 1–3: Islamabad Briefing & Flight to Skardu: Complete official climbing formalities at the Alpine Club of Pakistan in Islamabad. Fly to Skardu Airport (or drive the Karakoram Highway), organizing high-altitude porters and expedition food stores.
• Days 4–11: Drive to Askole & Trek up Baltoro Glacier to Concordia: Drive 4x4 jeeps to Askole village (3,000m). Trek along the legendary Baltoro Glacier past Jhola, Paiju, Khoburtse, Urdukas, and Goro II to reach the glacial amphitheater of Concordia (4,600m).
• Days 12–14: Trek up Vigne Glacier & Base Camp Establishment: Turn south from Concordia onto the snow-white Vigne Glacier, establishing Chogolisa Base Camp at 4,800m. Pitch mess, communications, and sleeping tents facing the imposing Bride Peak.
• Days 15–22: Route Opening & Staging Camp 1 and Camp 2: High-altitude guides and climbers fix ropes across the lower glacier and bergschrund, establishing Camp 1 (5,400m) and Camp 2 (6,100m) on the Chogolisa Saddle. Teams complete load carries and sleep at Camp 2 to build red blood cells before resting at Base Camp.
• Days 23–29: Pushing to Camp 3 & Rest Period: Ascend to Camp 2 and push the route along the exposed Northeast Ridge to establish Camp 3 (6,850m). Spend an acclimatization night at Camp 3, then descend safely to Base Camp for 4 days of hydration, nutrition, and weather monitoring.
• Days 30–35: Weather Window Monitoring & Summit Assault: When a stable weather window is confirmed by satellite forecasting, climb from Base Camp through Camp 2 and Camp 3. Starting at 2:00 AM from Camp 3, navigate the long, elegant snow ridge to reach the 7,665m summit of Chogolisa. Gaze upon K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I & II, and the Hushe Valley before descending safely to Camp 2 and Base Camp.
• Days 36–40: Return Trek via Gondogoro La or Baltoro, Skardu & Islamabad: Disassemble all camp infrastructure with strict leave-no-trace adherence.
