Pakistan Routes & Scenic Highways

A comprehensive travel guide to Pakistan’s mountain highways, strategic bypasses, and high-altitude road transit corridors.

Traversing Pakistan by road involves navigating some of the highest and most scenic engineered highways on the planet. Key transport arteries like the Karakoram Highway (N-35), Babusar Pass Route, Gilgit-Skardu Road (S-1), and Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) connect diverse valleys, desert plains, and high mountain gateways.

Mountain Highway Planning & Driving Tips

Seasonal Pass Closures

High mountain passes like Babusar (4,173m) and Shandur (3,700m) are closed by heavy winter snow from late October through May. During winter, travelers reach Gilgit via the lower KKH route along the Indus gorge.

Vehicle Suitability

Main highways are paved for standard saloons. However, tributary links to side valleys like Shimshal, Hushe, Minimarg, and Chapursan require 4x4 vehicles with high ground clearance.
